I solo camped in the Valley Of The Gods near the Utah / Arizona border. I had to park my 4-Runner next to my tent to block the wind that was whipping through the desert. I woke up about 2:30am local time to near total silence except for the occasional far off sound of a semi truck on highway 163. The moon was full for another hour and I had this wonderful place all to myself lit only by star and moonlight. After shooting the milky way for about 30 minutes I decided to head back to my tent and catch a nap before sunrise. As I was looking around the area one last time I decided to take one final shot of my campground on a lark. As it turns out this was one of my favorite photographs from my entire trip.
I spent the morning of my 45th birthday capturing the sunrise over the painted hills national monument outside of Mitchell Oregon. I had the entire area to myself for hours and only the deer kept me company as I watched the light play on the grasses.
